Choosing the Best Kitchen Layout for Your Home

kitchen

During the planning stage of a kitchen remodel, the first consideration is selecting the best kitchen layout for your house. Since there a number of different choices in layouts, you need to understand certain details to make the right decision. Follow our guidelines below and you will be able to choose the layout of your kitchen that complements your home in the ideal manner without confusion.

Learn the Main Types of Kitchen Layouts

To select a layout for your kitchen, you must first understand the following main types of them:

  • Single-wall layouts place all the appliances on just one wall. This layout is suitable for small houses. Most homeowners who select this kitchen include a refrigerator on one end with the stove at the other end, and a sink and dishwasher in the middle. Counter space is on each side of the sink since the counter is also over the dishwasher when it is a built-in model. Cabinets or drawers are below with cabinets above as well in this one-wall kitchen.
  • Galley layouts are two single-wall ones that face each other with a straight path in between for navigation. With this style of setup, major appliances are on both walls instead of just on one wall. Upper and lower cabinets also are in these kitchens.
  • L-shaped layouts provide you with two adjoining walls in the shape of an L, thus, their name. Two of the major appliances are on one wall with the third appliance on the second wall. Placement may depend on existing electrical, gas or plumbing hookups.
  • U-shaped layouts provide three walls for placement of prep space and appliances. The stove can be on one side of the U and the sink and dishwasher on the bottom of this shape with the refrigerator on the other side opposite from the stove.

Fit the Layout to the Size of Your Home

While the single-wall and galley layouts are suitable for small houses, the G, L and U ones will fit better into moderate-sized to large homes. You do not want the kitchen to devour all of your available space since this will limit the size of the other rooms near it.

Decide Whether or Not to Add an Island

If you decide on the G, L or U layout of kitchen, you will need to consider whether or not you wish to install an island. Islands can serve a variety of purposes ranging from additional prep space or storage to seating with stools to catch a quick snack at the bar.
